As any parent or guardian π€± with a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) would know, communication is among the more difficult areas that you would have to work on. Most often, children with autism remain nonverbal even after age 4.
That is why as the leading provider of early intervention in North Miami Davie at Superhero Kiddos,ABA/Behavior Support, we are listing down the ways that you can improve your communication π¨βπ¨βπ§ with your child through the best ABA interventions we use in our practice ourselves. These include:
- πΈEncouraging communication through play and social interactions
Consider activities that do not focus on their communication skills and instead on their interaction with their playmates. This removes the pressure of communicating verbally which then allows them to learn at their own pace. - πΈImitating positive behaviors
Imitation works by encouraging more vocalization in your child. That said, be mindful to do only the positive behaviors, stop when they start throwing things. - πΈExtending patience and leaving ‘space’ for your child to talk
Expect that the child ππ» will take longer to respond; in fact, expect that sometimes they won’t respond to the way you communicated initially. They may respond through body movement or sound. When they do, make sure to respond promptly. This helps them validate their way of communication.π§π»ββοΈ
